Risk and Safety Management

As I mentioned in my previous post that I will write about evaluation in the sustainable future. However, today I want to write about fire accidents since there were two fire accidents near my house last month.

In the first fire accident, more than 90 families lost their homes and in the second accident, 40 families suffer loss. These fire accidents have different causes. But this makes me think about what I did in my internship and study. I did an internship in Pertamina when I studied Bachelor. I did an internship in the safety team and we made a prototype of a portable water foam monitor. We presented in the Quality Control Competition and won the gold prize at the regional and national levels. After finishing my internship program, I joined National Science Week Competition and proposed this project as the case study. My team and I wrote the paper about this study. I will copy the abstract here:

Fire is a disaster that can happen anytime and anywhere. The real measurement of the fire problem is that it generates a loss. Such losses may be direct or indirect damage that can not be repaired. Many companies went bankrupt after the great fire, although the company has sufficient insurance to cover the losses, as the company was unable to regain market share lost when the factory shut down. Therefore, PASOPATI, Portable Automatic Water Foam Monitor was developed. It is easy and safe to operate. ATMega 32 is used as a control that can receive instructions from the remote control and additional motor driver for controlling the movement of the tool. The result is that PASOPATI can be controlled with a remote control with a distance of about 50 meters. So, the safety of the operator is awake and able to help firefighters to evacuate the victims. Pasopati can assist in putting out the fire to prevent greater losses due to fire.

So, I was thinking that this tool might help people to reduce risk and manage risk and safety. However, of course, we need a lot of investment to scale up the tool. I took a project management course when I studied for my Master two years ago and wrote a complete report about a project management plan. I remember that the risk and safety management will be the last part of the report. Risk management planning is the process by which how the risk is handled. In the standard risk management plan, there are risk categories, risk probability, risk impact, risk matrix and others. There are some tools and techniques in risk and safety management. But the important thing that we need to have a risk breakdown structure to know sources of risks and levels of risks. Then, we need the risk identification table to assess risk name, description and category. This is what I wrote in my report. This is a building construction project.

After identifying risks, we need to analyse risk. There are some methodologies to analyse risks. One of the results of risk analysis is the risk matrix. The probability and impact of the risks are identified using this matrix. They are divided into Extreme, Very High, High, Medium, Low, and Very low. The matrix is used to know the risk category and impact. So, risk and safety management will help us to prevent accidents and forecast the actions needed when the risks happen. I think in some building or housing constructions, risk and safety management are not prioritized.

Risk management is used not only for engineering, construction, or other implementation projects but also in research and development projects.

I hope we can reduce any potential risks in our activities.
