EXPORT : Chargeable Weight

Learning so many new terms in export activity was a bit confusing for me but shout out to Pak Kusuma that patiently explain it to Maya and me ^^

I want to share with you one of the very basic knowledge about export, chargeable weight!

Chargeable weight simply to compare between the actual weight and volume weight then choose the greater one. Why? The global logistic is a limited space business in terms of transportation and warehouse. It will not fair for the logistic company if we focus on one unit weight only since the goods might be heavy or bulky.

If we want to export “100 kg of coffee beans” and “100 kg of cotton”, which one do you think will take up more space?

Cotton is bulkier than coffee beans, so cotton takes up more space during the shipment :D

Below I will show you how to calculate the volume weight with 2 different types of shipment :

1. LCL Shipment

1 cubic meter = 1 ton

Example :

L = 0.7 m

W = 0.8 m

H = 1 m

Cargo size = 0.7 m x 0.8 m x 1 m

Cargo size = 0.56 cubic meter = 0.56 ton

2. Air Shipment

Volume (cubic cm) / 6000* = volume weight (kg).

*Some company (DHL & Fedex) may divide the volume by 5,000

Example :

L = 70 cm

W = 80 cm

H = 100 cm

Cargo size = (70 cm x 80 cm x 100 cm)/6000

Cargo size = 93,3 kg
